A Brief Description to Therapeutic Approaches

Trauma-Informed, Internal Family System, & Somatic psychotherapy, & Compassionate Focused Therapy:

For some people, when something overwhelming with intense emotions have happened to them, the memory of their experience comes crashing back into their mind, forcing them to re-experience the event with the same intensity of feeling - like it's happening again. These experiences may present as flashbacks or nightmares and are thought to occur because the mind was simply too overwhelmed during the event to process what was going on. As a result, these trauma legacies and the accompanying sights, sounds, thoughts, and feelings are stored in the brain and body in 'raw' form. Here, they can be accessed when something in everyday life triggers the original event. While it isn't possible to erase these memories, the process of Trauma Informed approach can help transform and connect with these memories stored within the brain/body and learn to tolerate the distress.

I work from a body-based perspective mainly with trauma, anxiety, and stress. My work is grounded in the Polyvagal Theory and Neuroscience which has allowed me to develop my work to encompass not just talking therapies but also somatic psychotherapies to encompass the person.

Attachment Theory: looks at the early experiences’ adults have had in relation with attachment problems which tends to fall into one of the following categories known as attachment styles. According to this theory, most people fit within a particular style and in some cases can meet the criteria of a disorder.

Avoidant: Those in this category are likely to struggle with trusting people and feel a sense of anger. They can lack empathy and shy away from intimacy. They often feel like they can only rely on themselves.

Anxious/ambivalent: People in this category tend to be compulsive in their behaviour. They tend to over-invest in relationships and may struggle to maintain long-term relationships. A strong desire for contact is common and they may perceive relationships as unbalanced.

Mindfulness/Self-compassion approach: fosters an attitude of curiosity, interest, and kindness towards our thoughts, emotions, and sensations, on purpose, and intentionally choosing where to place our attention. Mindfulness helps one to be in the present moment, guiding our attention in a non-judgmental way, to temporarily suspend ongoing, habitual, compulsive pattern to judge and compare one moment to the other, and/or one person to another. Mindfulness is an active process, and it is not just about sitting in one place or sitting still.

Humanistic therapy: is all about self-exploration. The following approaches can help you to increase self-awareness, and direct you towards finding a greater sense of purpose in life.

Transactional analysis: is based on the theory that we each have three ego states: Parent, adult, and child. By recognising ego-states, transactional analysis attempts to identify how individuals communicate, and how this can be changed.
